Florence attractionsSynagogue overview

The building of Florence Synagogue, according to the design of three architects, Treves, Falcini and Micheli, was completed in 1882. It represents one of the most important examples of a monumental temple in which the exotic (in this particular case Moorish) style has been used with rare restraint and harmony. The design was inspired by Costantinople's Byzantine church of Hagia Sophia, and presents a dome-crowned drum over the crossing. The exuberance of the internal decorations: the walls and the ceiling covered entirely with arabesques; also remarkable are the lacy carvings in wood and bronze, the inlaid marble floors, the rich mosaics and the stained glass windows. On the second floor of the Synagogue you can find the Jewish Museum of Florence.
